E257 series

Introducing

LThe E257 series (E257系E257-kei) is a DC electric multiple unit (EMU) train type operated in Japan for limited express services by East Japan Railway Company (JR East) and built jointly by Hitachi, Kinki Sharyo, and Tokyu Car Corporation.

Four variants exist: the original E257-0 series for use on Chūō Main Line Azusa and Kaiji limited-express services until 16 March 2019, the E257-500 series for use on Chiba area limited express services, the E257-2000/-2500 used for Odoriko services modified from former E257-0 and -500 series trains, and the E257-5000/5500 from former E257-0 and -500 trains for use on additional and charter services.

The upper part contains the electrical voltage indicators, the ATS-P dial, the train protection radio equipment and a few other buttons.

The lower part is fuller. On the left, we have:

  • Brake level and indicators for emergency brake in red (非常) and speed limit in green (抑速)
  • Some indicators:
    • 3-phase (三相)
    • Emergency short-circuit (非常短絡)
    • Snow resistant brakes (耐雪ブレーキ)
    • Safety Brakes (直通予備)
    • Cruise control (定速)
    • Parking brakes (駐車ブレーキ)
  • The TIMS screen

In the middle we have:

  • The door-closing indicator
  • The pocket watch
  • The emergency stop
  • The brake cylinder pressure (black arrow) and main air reservoir pressure (red arrow).
  • The speed dial

On the right we have the ATS-P indicators and a “Power performance selection switch” (力性能選択スイッチ) with a “high” (高) and “low” (低) position.
