Introducing

The 209 series (209系電車, 209 Keidensha) is a type of Japanese DC multiple unit operated by the East Japan Railway Company (JR East), which appeared at the end of 1992 and currently operates mainly on Tokyo's outer suburban lines.

They were originally intended to operate on the Keihin Tohoku and Negishi lines, to replace the 103 series old trainsets, which were taken over from the Japanese National Railways (JNR) (discontinued in 1987) in large quantities and deteriorated through heavy use, and partly to increase the line's transport capacity.
